Genesis of Confiteor Deo

This song came-to-be through a series of events.

The first event was the desire for a church service to be developed around A.C.T.S. (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication). We quickly came to the realization that there is a dearth of songs written that convey a confession of our sins, both individual and corporate.
The second event was that my mother, who attends a Catholic church, gave me the words for the 'Confiteor Deo', or 'Confession to God'. This prayer, or a version thereof, forms an integral part of the Mass in many of the liturgical churches (Anglican, Episcopalian, and Catholic to name a few).

The words and melody for the chorus came together rather quickly. I sensed that they were a pleading that came from the depth of the soul. In partnership with Bruce, the verses and bridge took more structure. He and I worked together to shape the lyric and melody of both the verses and bridge to match the tone of the chorus. Once we were done, we introduced the song to our music team. The response was overwhelmingly positive. It quickly became part of our repertoire for use in Sunday morning services, where it was also well received. The real test came, however, when I played it for my mother and her church friends.

It was a Sunday morning after Mass. My family was in Calgary visiting my parents. After Mass on the Sunday, the group made their way to my parents' house and had breakfast together. After breakfast, I pulled out my guitar and sang the song for them. The reaction was that this rendition of the 'Confiteor Deo' had captured the intent and spirit of the prayer and made it more accessible for all believers, regardless of denomination. That came as a real confirmation for me that we had put together a song that would minister far beyond the walls of our own church.

Our hope and prayer is that 'Confiteor Deo' will be a blessing to you as you listen to it and incorporate it into your worship.
