Greg Connor’s father died when Greg was an infant, 50 years ago. Greg’s mother passed recently.
In the midst of going through boxes in his mother’s attic, Greg found a very old reel-to-reel tape entitled “For my children”, and it wasn’t in his mother’s handwriting.
One track on the reel turned out to be a recording of a christmas dinner when Greg was about 2 years old, with Greg’s father carrying on a lively conversation with family friends, and even referencing little “Gregory”.
The other track was Mr. Connor reading a couple of bedtime stories for his kids.
The technical challenge was converting the one track, recorded at an ancient 3.5 ips, into something listenable. The emotional challenge was the knowledge that the client was about to hear his father’s voice for the first time.
“My sisters were in shock. Debbie, who was 6 when he died, became emotional. I didn’t tell them who it was right away. She said that she thought maybe it was our Dad, but she knew for sure when he did his “Woody Woodpecker” impersonation on the CD. She says she actually remembered him doing that.
Thanks again for your contribution to this special family moment. Much appreciated.”
Gracenote is honoured to have been a part of restoring this family legacy.
